Defining the Gospel

God created the world and offers man a chance to repent and escape judgement and obtain eternal life on the earth through his Son when Jesus returns.   That's the basic message Paul preached to an absolutely pagan, idolatrous audience in his sermon on Mars Hill.  It's the same gospel message Jesus and his disciples preached and taught.  It's the same message promised to the patriarchs and prophets of Israel.  It's the same message of the early church.  But why has the world, and most modern Christianity, complicated and rejected such a simple and basic message of salvation?
